Why Are Doctors On Twitter?

The Healthcare Marketing Exchange’s recent post “Priority Planning: The Nuts and Bolts of Engaging with Healthcare Consumers” revealed some interesting trends:

The National eHealth Collaborative’s mission is to enable a secure nationwide information exchange. The NeHC focuses on three core programs:

  • Consumer engagement
  • Healthcare Information Exchange (HIE)
  • Health Information Technology (HIT) education

The NeHC wants to provide a crossroad between the consumer (social media) and the HIT community. Clearly, the NeHC has a unique perspective from the intersection of what others might consider to be divergent topics. Actually, there were some startling revelations gleaned from the NeHC data. “The survey found that while about 33 percent of respondents said their organization’s strategies for consumer engagement with health Information Technology (IT) are not clearly defined, [and] 59 percent said their organization is developing clear consumer engagement strategies.”

It was curious that even a third of the respondents had even considered combining consumer engagement and HIT. Accenture is recommending blending and consumer engagement if patients are informed that the technology is available at your practice and that it will not interfere with their doctor/patient relationship, “Patients Not Willing to Sacrifice Physician Face Time for Tech”:

How about you? Have you considered what your patients think about healthcare information technology? Have you discussed the topic with your patients? What did you hear from them? Twitter Thursday on LADezign.com is interested in technology and patient engagement or in any other topic important to physicians. Feel free to share your thoughts.
