Searching Twitter with Twellow

Staying current with Twitter API (application programming interface) can be difficult. Twitter is a popular social media so API pop up like mushrooms in a damp forest, even after the changes that Twitter has made in its API policy. One such API is Twellow, which purports to be the Yellow Pages of the Twitterverse.

The concept is good but does searching Twitter with Twellow work for your needs as a busy medical professional?

Signing up for Twellow was a breeze. The procedure was simple and straight-forward and the confirmation email was delivered quickly. So far, so good.

You search the membership of Twellow rather than the entire membership of Twitter for whom or what you are seeking. This is an important feature. Requiring that a person fills out a membership form reduces a lot of the weird elements common to any social media.

You have to be able to define a goal and implement that intent to be listed on Twellow. Remember, registering is easy. There is no easier way to reduce angry people, spammers and bots than to require them to show that they are responsible people capable of interacting with others.

There are a lot of people using Twellow. The top Twellower this week is Snoop Dogg with 10,177,842 followers. OK, Snoop Dogg may not fit your definition of responsible but he does know how to get down to business!

Twellow has 171,740 users listed under the healthcare category. You need momentum and membership to make a search directory valuable. Twellow passed this test as well with a sufficient number of users to start communities which you can join.

Digging into the sub-categories was where I feel that many Twitter Thursday readers will start losing interest. Not all, but many. The two largest sub-categories were “beauty” (28, 460) and “alternative medicine” (23,423).

Trying hard to avoid most Twitter puns, I have to remind you that “birds of a feather flock together”. People that are searching for these types of practices appear to be the ones that will use Twellow. Surgical, radiology and senior care were less well-represented at 791, 444 and 383 respectively.

The top three candidates presented for individual results under “Health” confirmed that medical professionals might want to look elsewhere to register their practices and seek patients.

  • 1. Lil Wayne WEEZY F (@LilTunechi) “IM YOUNG MONEY”
  • 2. daniel tosh (@danieltosh) “not a doctor”
  • 3. Peter Facinelli (@peterfacinelli) “I pretend to be other people... In real life that's considered a personality disorder. If you get paid to do it its called acting.”

Fun? Yes. Is Twellow a good investment of your time? Not for me.
