Traffic Tuesdays

Share Documents and Push Traffic with Scribd

Wouldn't it be great if you could publish and share documents as easily as you can a video on your Youtube channel? Now, there is an increasingly popular, and SEOMoz-endorsed, social reading and publishing site called Scribd that allows you to do just this. Described as "the YouTube for documents," Scribd allows you to upload files in a variety of formats, optimize them for SEO just as you would a video, and share them directly or through embeddable links.

As I’ve advised my Los Angeles website design clients (and my readers on previous Traffic Tuesdays) it's important to generate and strategically share content that informs prospective customers about what a company does and offers, and helps establish the business owner behind it as an authoritative voice and leader in a given field. Much like article publishing, uploading documents through Scribd affords you a tremendous amount of exposure. Currently, the site hosts tens of millions of documents and over 50 million users, which include Samsung, UNICEF, Red Cross, Ford Motor Company, and other notable brands. In addition, more than 1.8 million searches have been run through the site.

Scribd is free and very easy to use. Just create an account, log in, and go to Upload. You’ll quickly see that the site supports formats MS Office, PDF's, Open Office, and other file formats such as Docx and PPTX. When adding your file, use your Title, Tags, and Description blanks as opportunities to enter some targeted keywords to help get you indexed. Scribd evens lets you create a unique URL and embedded code for each document for sharing purposes. Once uploading is complete, you can "Play" your file in List, Book, or Slide mode, and begin tracking it to see how many people view it.

Thanks for reading. Jason.
