SwiftKey: A Game Changer or Just another Touch-Screen Keyboard App?

We’ve all heard about the frustrations of texting on a touch screen phone or tablet. The Android based, “swiping” style keyboard app, SwiftKey, attempts to simplify this everyday process and eliminates the pain that comes with having to use your touch screen keyboard. What sets SwiftKey apart from other swiping-styled keyboard apps, is their personalized predictive engine that predicts your train of thought and will offer up a suggestion of words. Now, what’s not intriguing is the simplicity of rapid speed typing, with a fast learning curve, accompanied by interchangeable keyboard interfaces, but it is the possibility of using this app in a professional or educational setting.

Technology has been rapidly making its way into many facets of our lives and there are certain industries that can really benefit from an app like SwiftKey.

Take the doctor’s office for example. We’ve all gotten prescriptions from doctors that are impossible to read, even to the pharmacist who needs to give you the right lifesaving medication! Now obviously, a doctor can type a note up on a computer on any other device, without the need of this app. However, a doctor often needs to write out documentation or prescriptions using medical terminology and this app would save a lot of time auto-completing this “learned” terminology, which would help avoid any miscommunication that could come from writing out abbreviations or illegible handwriting. Through the app’s predictive engine and ease of use, the doctor can type you up something legible and more importantly quickly, so that he can tend to the next patient in the waiting room.

Enter the classroom... We are already familiar with technology in the classroom, but this app can especially be of help for students with learning disabilities that can benefit from the SwiftKey’s predictive engine. Since the app “analyzes a user’s input from the moment they start to ‘flow’ a word”, not only does the student learn from the app, but the app learns from the student, which ultimately could benefit the student in aiding his or her train of thought when it comes to putting complete sentences together.

It’s important that when any new innovation comes out, we look at the bigger picture and see how this can help others outside of its direct use. For SwiftKey, the possibilities in different industries seem endless.
