Keeping It Clean

This blog post has nothing to do with sepsis: http://www.caringisourcalling.org/sites/main/files/fileattachments/sepsis_final_0.pdf. It has everything to do with cleaning your tweet stream. Twitter Thursday is dedicated to sharing credible Twitter Application Programming Interfaces (API).

Twitter is a phenomenal social media platform. It is also host to a number of automated spammers that use “bots” (as in robots) to set up sites to sell you and more importantly, you followers something...again and again and again. This is why I don’t recommend that you follow everyone that follows you. Heresy to some but common sense to those that have worked hard to deliver a quality experience to your followers.

Twitter is like any other social media. You give value and build trusted relationships with people. They will approach you to buy when they need your services.

You know that your customers don’t want to be sold. They look for you as an informed leader in your field. How long do you think that they will stick around your Twitter page if what they find is mostly ads?

I recommend that you use Twit Cleaner to make that you are building a credible community.

Twit Cleaner analyzes your followers for patterns of behavior. They make a list of Tweeple that you might want to unfollow. You do not have to agree with their recommendations. Nothing is done automatically to unfollow people. You initiate each and every unfollow. So a friend of yours on Twitter that is still learning the ropes about social media while you explain to them again that people really do not want to know about their plans for making a move on you know who unless that you know who is a celebrity...and that the celebrity has asked for a court order!

What kind of behaviors does Twit Cleaner analyze?
  • Dodgy behavior
  • Spam phrases
  • @spamming
  • Duplicate links
  • Duplicate tweets
  • App spam
  • Advertising networks
  • Absenteeism
  • No updates in a month
  • Fewer than 10 tweets
  • Deleted accounts
  • Suspended accounts
  • Repetitive
  • High numbers of duplicate links or tweets
  • Flooding
Flooding is when your followers are sending so many tweets out to your tweet-stream that your other followers only find their spammed tweets

  • Non-responsive
  • Tweeple that never answer others’ tweets
  • Tweeple that follow back less than 10% of the time
  • Tweet streams that are all feeds from another source
  • Little in the way of new content
  • Does nothing but retweet
  • Posts only quotes
  • Not very interesting
  • People that are only interested in themselves
  • People that don’t have many people following them (frequently composed of the people that are only interested in themselves)
Don’t be surprised if your followers drop off after you have unfollowed a bunch of shady characters. People aren’t weeping in their pillows at night (Why? Why? What is it that I said?) Spammers set programs to unfollow you so that they can go spam others instead.

You might be wondering what others are thinking about your behavior after you have analyzed the behavior of others. Twit Cleaner will generate a report for you so that you can become a better Twitizen.
