When employers ponder how to best use technology to improve productivity first thoughts are along the lines of what hot mobile gadget will help them manage their time better, what website design will get the most traffic, or what new photocopier will best serve the needs of their office. Unfortunately, this myopic view of technology focused that is only on immediate benefits to an office can ultimately hinder long-term business growth and productivity. Given the advances in brain scanning technology and neuroscience research in general, employers have the ability to understand their employees far better than ever before.

If a manager makes decisions based on current neuroscience, such as the simple finding that “less stress in employees improves memory and learning,” they will likely be ahead of the curve in the competitive game of business, especially if their competitors continue to adhere to outdated management styles and corporate structures. Two young companies that come to mind that seem to have gotten the message loud and clear that people are not robots are Google and Facebook; the former has a bowling alley in one office, and the latter apparently lets employees skate board in the office. While you may not want to implement a mandatory milk-and-nap-time policy overnight, you might find that just by offering fruit in the cafeteria is enough to combat employees’ afternoon energy dips and food comas.

Despite my strong opinion that we should all apply information about our brains and human behavior to the workplace, I am not advocating that every manager earn a certificate in psychology or hire an in-house neuroscientist. The internet has made so much information available about scientific advances that can affect productivity that to ignore this data would be unwise (be wary however of the sources on the internet still). For example, if you notice that your employees fall asleep at 2:30PM regularly, or that the number of gray hairs on their heads directly corresponds to their number of hours worked per day, then you should be examining tools to keep them alert, awake, and young and perky for as long as possible.

A possible first step to improving productivity in your office might be to offer gym discounts or throw in a few treads mills around the office. As John Median points out in his book, Brain Rules ”Exercisers outperform couch potatoes in long-term memory, reasoning, attention, problem-solving tasks, and more.” If you get your employees a chance to move around they may be smarter afterward, which is likely to be a benefit to you. That is, unless you want employees with the intelligence level of monkeys, who as one study showed, make better investment decisions when picking stocks. Or better yet, get some treadmill or bike desks for your employees. I know that I sure would love to burn away the pizza and cookies that fuel my great ideas.

Another way to potentially use modern research to improve productivity is by understanding the strongest motivational language and the best incentives to keep your employees doing their best. Science shows that we are super sensitive to external factors, so take advantage of this by creating the external environment most suitable for your employees whether it is giving them offices with windows or promoting team spirit by assigning projects to teams rather than individuals. And while you are doing it, make sure to communicate management’s willingness to listen to innovations or possible solutions from everyone within the company.

A final recommendation based on new neuroscience that can likely benefit managers is to have high expectations of other staff members and making sure they know it form positive behavioral signals. If you smile and tell an employee, “I am excited to see you presentation and think it will really showcase your analytical skills,” you will likely get a better presentation than if you barked, “I want the presentation by Monday and it better be better than the last one you did.” Demonstrating the efficacy of positive expectations on performance is the study described by Bella dePaulo in her article, Can Your Expectations Shape My Behavior that showed how students perform much better in class and on tests when their teachers are primed to expect high achievement from them regardless if there is any concrete reason to do so.

In conclusion, work is not entirely about suffering, and people are not merely robots. Reading up about psychology and developments in neuroscience is the equivalent of a car owner actually opening up their manual and learning how to fold down the backseats or how to program the radio. If you are trying to be an effective leader, the more information you have about how your employees’ brains work, the more effective you can be at keeping your business “machine” operating optimally.

Almost every website is unique despite the ubiquity of certain elements that are consistently incorporated into their design layouts. Over the past decade we have come to expect certain things from our web browsing experience, such as contact information, a list of services or products, and an explanation of what each site does or who the people are behind the site.

Despite the fact that there are formal usability principles that guide the planning and development of successful websites, there are still so many sites that miss the mark in terms of basic GUI performance.

Look at it this way: you wouldn’t invite someone to your house for dinner and then immediately dive into a game of hide-and-seek with your unsuspecting visitor (unless you are under age ten or crazy), so why would you get a visitor to the site and leave them wondering what the heck you do or what the heck is wrong with you.

Here are a few critical steps that you can take in developing a high performance website that will save you from sending the wrong message about your brand:

Growing Business Leads: Watch What Consumers Do, Not What They Say

If you are wondering why your marketing schemes are not translating into new business leads, you may have to ask yourself what you are doing wrong. However, even if you ask yourself that question over and over it is unlikely to get you any closer to the truth because, well, you are human and we are biologically programmed to sometimes wear blinders to the truth…And, even if you ask your clients for feedback you still may not get an honest answer as the classic Pepsi vs. Coke taste test shows: when asked what they preferred Coke or Pepsi, tasters preferred Pepsi when they couldn’t see the labels, but when they knew what they were drinking, there was a higher preference for Coke. So basically, just asking for feedback from clients might not help you since the Coke vs. Pepsi experiment demonstrates that we don’t always put our money where our mouth is and we don’t always know it.

So, how do find out where you are missing the mark in understanding client behavior and then marketing accordingly?

You might your friends what might be wrong with your website, or to have a look and see if your advertisements have any typos, but they might be just as unreliable as your clients in knowing anything. Let’s say that you have asked all your friends, and they all tell you, as most supportive and loving friends do, that “your site is great! And, the wit of your ads is killer and compelling!” You might be so confounded by the whole problem that you think you have developed dyslexia or decide that you might just be ready to take an early retirement. Assuming neither are accurate, do you then, find new friends or hire a consultant to do an intensive competitive analysis? Before your desperation drives you to drastic action such as into retirement or a therapist’s office, I recommend using the best tool at your disposal to get to the bottom of the situation - the Internet.

Here are a few steps you can take to help you use the internet as a tool more effectively (this assumes you are of sound mind of course):

Step 1: Monitor your analytics data. Find out how visitors are getting to your website. What keywords do they find you with? If you are selling stuffed koala bears and you see that you are getting a lot of traffic from a blog about those lovely furry creatures, then look and see what other koala bear blogs you might reach out to get a link on (with a juicy anchor text of course). Also, keep in mind when looking at your analytics what pages on your site get the most traffic. Are people spending time on your site or do they leave when they get there because they get confused about what you sell or think your lime green flashing logo is a bit unprofessional for a koala bear site? Or, if you see that viewers are spending a decent amount of time on one particular page, pay attention to what words worked to get them there and what is good about the page. For example, may you see that people spent more time looking at pictures of stuffed squirrels this year instead of pandas. Or heck, maybe you see that the release of a new Chipmunks movies has a direct correlation to the traffic to your stuffed chipmunk page. Bottom line is that if you are not watching your analytics closely you are missing out on opportunities.

Step 2: Set up monitoring software on your site that lets you watch recordings of viewer traffic on your site, such as Userfly. Such software allows you to see where people are clicking, what text they are reading (if they use the cursor to read), and whether they are watching your videos or clicking on one part of the site more than another. When you analyze this data you can then figure out what needs optimization, editing, or trashing. Yeah, sounds a little creepy, but only you can see the recorded videos as the site owner and if you really pay attention and give people what they want from your site, then everyone wins in the long run. For example, if I really am looking for the cutest stuffed turtle on the planet and you know that your turtles are the cutest, please do me the favor and optimize for that keyword and make sure I can find the turtle when I get to your site. No need to show me lots of giraffes and armadillos, a simple list of what you carry is fine as long as I can find the turtles on the list. And be careful not to "stuff" the page with too many keywords...

Step 3: Test out ad campaigns. After you figure out what keywords you want to target, set up short test runs for variations of the keywords the with adwords. For example, if you have way too many monkeys in stock you may try to run two PPC ads along the lines “World’s most cuddly stuffed monkeys,” and “Monkey Toys: Cute Stuffed Animals Made With Love.” By running comparison test ads you can find out what performs better and is most cost effective. In this monkey scenario it might turn out that the phrase Monkey Toys gets lots of clicks and no good leads, and stuffed monkeys well mostly attracts people interested in taxidermy…Without some research and playing with words, you may never learn and grow, which is what we want to do…right? So, stop monkeying around; do your research, examine the results, and adjust your strategy accordingly.

In conclusion, unless you study the actions your clients are taking on your site and in their search engine searches, then you are just playing a guessing game at marketing. If you don’t want to do the research or just want rankings on Google, you can get those by hiring an SEO firm, but make sure you get some referrals so you know that they company is taking the right action and seeing the whole picture. Online marketing is a bit like gardening: if you plant desert flowers in the tundra you probably won’t see much growth, but if you take a look around and plant the flowers that are thriving (sorry weeds, not talking about you), then you have a chance at growing some pretty plants. So, take a look around and see what is working in your analytics and in your user activity and adjust your “planting” strategy accordingly.

What are your most effective strategies for managing your time and helping your colleagues and employees to manage theirs? If this is something you haven't really thought about in terms of revising your work tactics for improved efficiency, it might just be because you don't have a reliable way to track the time devoted to various tasks and projects on given days. After all, variables like unexpected calls, meetings, minor emergencies, and other distractions make it difficult to gauge how much time a particular task takes up. Why fixate on watching a clock when a nice piece of freeware like Grindstone will do it for your workplace?
As my Los Angeles website design employees will probably attest, I'm fond of the question "How long did that take you?" It's not that I like to burn people out so much as have a rough idea of what they can realistically cover and, if I can, help them to do it better and more easily. However, I realize that in considerably larger enterprises, a more systematic way of tracking time spent is preferable, especially when it comes to filling out time sheets and invoices. That is exactly why Grindstone can be such a help.

To get a breakdown of time devoted to various projects over a period of time, simply pull up Grindstone and start its stopwatch. It will even keep track of time you spend away from your desk, and present the final results in both an easy-to-read color-coded pie chart and projected payroll estimate. Grindstone is available for free download from Epiforge.

Storywheel Spins a Telling Tale for Photo-Sharing

How do you infuse the images on your website with the worth of a thousand words? The various photo-sharing and editing programs and software make it possible to customize, embellish, and tweak your photos to enhance the uniqueness of your brand's online image. As my Los Angeles website design team often shows me, you can make things pretty ornate with some of these fancy tools, but sometimes the simplest (and thankfully easiest) tricks and solutions are the best to suit your needs, hence the explosive popularity of the photo-sharing app, Instagram.

The appeal of Instagram is not necessarily the ability to add a bunch of wild effects to a photo but to recapture the grainy, unpolished softness of pre-digital images that we remember. Perhaps an app that makes a crisp, high-definition photo look like a Polaroid from 1985 seems counterintuitive. Call it what you will, but Facebook paid $1 billion for it this past week, so Instagram- which began as a startup with next to no money and no business plan- is going to become even more integrated into the way we share pictures through social media. Thus, keeping your website's images a step ahead of the game with a fun app like Storywheel can't hurt.

Released by Soundcloud, Storywheel lets you create your own vintage-looking slideshows incorporate audio narratives and music. Given the Instagram's recent partnership with Facebook, several related features will be added to users' profiles and timelines, making it beneficial to your business page to have a working knowledge of how to use them. To use Storywheel, all you need is an Instagram account (which you can get through iTunes or the Google Play Store). Then, go to the main site, connect to your Instagram images, and start telling your story.

What are some specific, technical factors that influence traffic and ultimately ranking and visibility of your company? That is certainly a question that most of my Los Angeles website design clients when we begin the first stages of their SEO campaigns. Although the Google algorithm is always changing, there are indeed a handful of terms it is important to know and understand in order to generate organic and lasting traffic and SERP rankings. For this Traffic Tuesday, we'll briefly go over six of them:

Page Authority - Expressed in a numeric value on a 100-point scale, this factor tells you how likely it is that an individual page will rank well. It is derived from the Linkscape site, which reflects mozTrust and mozRank. You can benefit your PA by obtaining links from other outside pages that are heavily linked to already.
Domain Authority - Not to be confused with Page Authority, Domain Authority indicates the likely rankings of an overall site and subdomains rather than a single page, though it is also scored on a 100-point scale. Technically speaking, it is the number of root domains which link to different pages on your website.

Number of links - This one is pretty self-explanatory. It's the number of links pointing to your stated domain. It is a factor that can be gradually influenced and improved by your SEO as a whole but it is generally helpful knowledge for gauging the effectiveness of your campaign over time. You can check this information easily with the link:www.yourdomainname.com function in Google webmaster tools.

Number of domains linking to your domain - This notes how many whole domains (as opposed to individual pages) are linking to you and is useful for determining recipients of reciprocal link building.
Is a link Followable - Or is it No Follow? The former is more beneficial and desirable as it simply means Google is able to crawl your link. Watch out for No Follow conditions when pursuing the placement of links on other sites, as it is essentially wasted SEO effort.

301 Redirects - As we went over on a previous Web Design Wednesday, this just means that pages that have undergone changes have had a 301 redirect implemented so a user's clicks and bookmarks are taken through to the right destination so as to preserve existing traffic.

Target URL - This refers to the distinct domain URL to which you are aiming to direct traffic. It is important to enter into your SEO campaign with a clear idea of where you want to push traffic to keep your linking as consistent as possible. Most often, the Target URL is a site's homepage but just as often there are opportunities to place links to highly specific and relevant inner pages.

How long does it take you to narrow down your searches and find what you are looking for on online classified sites? With worldwide sites like Craigslist, it can eat up quite a bit of time to modify your search inquiry to find bed frames, mopeds, job openings, or even coffee dates that fit your criteria. If you've been wishing not only for easier sorting capabilities but convenient handheld access to such a forum, then let Craigsphone bring your wait to an end.

A site's navigational ease is critical, as I often stress to my Los Angeles website design clients, and as far as Craigslist's is concerned things are pretty straightforward, scannable, and compartmentalized, but that doesn't mean the wealth of resources and postings doesn't overwhelm, especially if you're trying to view it on the go and need the basic details to be easy and quick to browse.

Praised by ZDNet as being "a better choice than even using [craigslist.org] on your PC," Craigsphone delivers clean and easy to view versions of site features, and lets you post and upload photos directly from your phone. You can also utilize GPS to customize searches to your geographical location to find what's closest to you faster, and use click-to-call functions. Many users find the app's more colorful layout with larger, bolder fonts to be preferable to PC-based version's text-heavy appearance.

Craigsphone 3.1.1 is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch via iTunes for free.

How do you get your days off to productive start? Getting up when we aim to instead of hitting the Snooze button five times is usually a good beginning, but the temptation to grab another ten minutes of rest can be strong when work or personal responsibilities have us stretched particularly thin. What's worse is that those additional Z's often don't make us feel that more rested, even when we get them by accidentally disabling our alarm clocks and oversleeping (it's okay, we all do it), because that piercing sound jolts us awake unnaturally. Funny how a free mobile app like Alarm Clock Xtreme beat the conventional nightstand clocks to a solution for this.
Given the typically early hours at which my Los Angeles website design company has me getting up every morning, my circadian rhythm is sort of naturally programmed by now, but I like to have an alarm set just to be safe. Then, one morning I found my faithful little nightstand clunker of over a decade was not going off. With a packed schedule, I knew I would not have time to stop at Best Buy for a replacement for a few days, so I browsed alarm apps and quickly realized that was one errand I could scratch off my list. There's thousands of wake-up apps out there, but I specifically like Xtreme.

A lot of alarm apps require way too many steps, which few of us feeling like dealing with as we hit the pillow past midnight. Setting Xtreme, on the other hand, was like learning to ride a bicycle. Open the app, adjust your wake-up time with pluses and minuses, and save. It retains frequently requested times or lets you set them to recur only on certain days to save you even more trouble. Also, the alarm function itself is designed with our physiology in mind. Instead of a dreadful, jarring sound that forces you (and probably your spouse and nearby pets) awake unpleasantly, Xtreme's sound (which can be any number of default ringers or even your favorite music) starts softly and gradually builds. Users note they feel more rested and less irritated when they're awakened in a such a way. Not that this app goes easy on you; Snooze is an option but it shows you the number of times you've already hit it to remind you the shower and espresso awaits. I don't think this download is something you need to sleep on.

10 Ways a Google Plus Website Will Help Your Small Business

What are the basic benefits of a Google+ business page? Google+ is the new social network recently launched by the search engine giant. Building a business profile on Google+ will help small businesses develop their customer "circles." drive traffic to their websites and promote their brand.
Google+ allows users to create "circles." Circles may consist of individuals with common interests, friends of friends, and those who are recommended by others to the individual. Small businesses may also create and grow circles of potential customers. For small businesses, growing their circles around a brand will increase the chances that others find their profile on Google+.

Because Google+ does not allow brand pages yet, as Facebook does, building your small business brand is a bit more challenging than posting and promoting a business page on Facebook. Google+ is more geared toward creating communities (circles) of individuals with common interests and goals.

Develop your small business brand by regularly interacting with members from your Google+ circles.
Create Google+ circles around common interests you share with others, while keeping your brand in the forefront. For example, if your small business sells snowboards, develop a Google+ circle around snowboarding. Without obviously promoting your small business, interact with others who are interested in snowboarding.

If your small business sells an auto-related service, such as car insurance, develop a circle with members that are interested in cars. Be advised, though, about being too obvious in promoting your business. Social network aficionados are usually turned off by shameless product promotion. However, a genuine interest shared with those in your circle will enable you to subtly promote your brand.
Speak about what you know best on your Google+ site.
If you have a particular area of expertise, share it with your circles on Google+. For example, if your small business is a property management company, and you have been in the real estate business for years, develop your Google+ circles around common interest with regards to buying, selling, renting and managing properties.
Spark discussions in with those in your Google+ circles by finding and posting interesting links.
Links related to the interests of those in your circles will demonstrate that you are committed to generating conversation and keeping up with the latest trends in your areas of interest.
Ask for feedback on products and services from those in your circle.
One way to stimulate conversation within your Google+ circles is to ask for feedback. Recently, Michael Dell posed a question to members of his Google+ circles. He asked what the folks thought about a new Android mobile purchasing app. Needless to say, he received a lot of feedback and generated buzz about the app at the same time.
Start by creating circles of people you already know.
If your small business has employees, create a circle on Google+ that includes your employees. Make sure they represent themselves as your business’ employees and make sure they are committed to promoting the business.

After all, you don't want any thinly veiled negativity weighting down the interactions. However, helpful and positive posts will generate buzz with others in the community.

In addition, Google+ supports importing all of your Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail contacts into the social network. Google+ also supports importing contacts from Microsoft Outlook. Build your brand by creating a circles that include those who are already contacts in Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Outlook.
Join circles of competitors and other entrepreneurs.
The best way to stay on top of the competition is to be a insider member of one of their Google+ circles. You don’t have to be underhanded about it, either. Invite them to join one of your circles, as well. Healthy competition is good for everyone.
Post engaging material often.
To promote your small business or brand, the key is to engage those in your circles. The way you engage your followers is to post interesting content that elicits comments. When people comment on your content, the conversation rises to another level and your content develops momentum.

Of course, monitor the comments. The last thing you want is for someone to trash your brand or business with unwarranted spam. When you post content, stay on top of the comments. You may receive some very valuable feedback in the process.
Don’t over-promote your product or business.
Not only does Google frown on those who shamelessly promote a brand or business, Google+ users are quick to move on to other content if they feel like they are being "sold" something. The key to developing your brand on Google+ is to generate conversation around topics that relate to your brand.
Develop real social circles and friendships.
Those who are successful at promoting a brand or product on Google+ first develop a social network of real relationships. The promotional aspect takes a back seat to generating connections and friendships. Once you have circles of followers who are genuinely interested in reading and commenting on your posts, and interacting with other members of the circle, promoting your business will naturally follow.

Also, be sure to authentically engage with others. Read comments and posts from other users. Don't be overly concerned about your own content and make sure that you are showing an interest in what others have to say.
Create logical Google+ circles.
For example, create Google+ circles that naturally coagulate, such as investors, business partners, employees and friends that share a common hobby or interest.

Final Thoughts
From online car insurance comparison sites to software development firms, business owners are quickly learning to use Google+ to generate buzz and enlist followers. With subtle techniques, Google+ can become a valuable resource for all small businesses, including car insurance companies, software development firms and others.

These 10 tips will help any small business grow their brand on the Google+ social network. Reviewers and others speculate that it is just a matter of time before Google+ allows brand pages to be posted on the site. Until then, following these guidelines will help you create interesting content, develop a following and successfully promote your small business.

Do you have a quick and easy means of seeing who links to your company website or blog? While various social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and others send alerts when you receive a mention, share, or retweet, it's the placement of those backlinks that really count when it comes to pushing traffic so why shouldn't you have a way to view them? With Open Site Explorer, you can view the basic, important data of sites that lead back to you.

Obtaining backlinks is a boon to your SEO campaign but in order to reap their full benefit you need to learn about them and why certain pages of yours are getting the most attention. Collecting and analyzing backlink data has been a fundamental element of the campaigns of both my Los Angeles website design company and any one of our clients. In recent years, Google or Bing's linkscape or Yahoo Site Explorer has supplied basic information like page rank but as the algorithm undergoes changes, a more in-depth tool like Open Site Explorer yields even more helpful information.

To use Open Site Explorer, simply run your URL (up to three before you'll be asked to sign up for a free trial version) through its checker. In a few seconds, you can view such metrics as page and domain authority, linking root domains, and signals from social media sites. By examining this data, you can see the strength of individual backlinks, view a competitive analysis of other sites relating to what you do or offer, and find potential for new backlinking opportunities. Viewing certain data requires Pro Membership, which costs $99 per month.

How often do you find yourself away on travel or simply pulling a lengthy night in the office and wondering if you properly locked up, turned off climate controls, or set lights or security features accordingly? This common scenario happens to the best of us and it can prove frustrating and distracting when we're in transit or just away from our homes, loved ones, and valuables, but with ADT Pulse you have the ability to monitor and adjust your dwelling's security system settings from anywhere.
As an internet marketing professional, I appreciate that most of our day-to-day needs and responsibilities can be addressed and managed through our smartphones and tablets. Also, as a husband and father of four with a dog, I consider reliable home security to be paramount, especially when the work day at my Los Angeles website design company stretches to the wee hours. Thus, I really admire ADT Pulse's reconciling these notions by putting home security system control in the palm of the busy mobile user.

Through the use of Z-Wave technology, ADT Pulse allows you to keep tabs on not only alerts, light, thermostat, and video monitor settings, but also carbon monoxide presence, water leaks, electrical wiring, and appliances. Step behind your surveillance camera's lens to view entrances and exits, set or disarm alarms, or even turn off unneeded features to save power. Pulse is free for your existing ADT system and available for Androids, iPhones, iPads, and Blackberry's.

How often is the quality of a photo you take on your mobile beneath your expectations? Granted, mobile cameras have come a long way in the just a few years since they were a coveted novelty, but all too often yours may fail to capture the level of detail for which you'd hoped. There may also be times when you find yourself wishing you had some of the same effects and enhancement capabilities available on a PC-based photo editing program. Well, with PicsArt Photo Studio you have exactly this in the palm of your hand. Don't worry, you don't have to be a Los Angeles website design company to afford this. It is indeed for Free Friday.
In the fast-moving Google world, an image can be worth a billion words, especially if it was spontaneously captured. Let's say you happen to grab a mobile photo of a timely and topical occurrence or event that is relevant to your blog and could bring considerable traffic your way, yet the picture is fuzzy, lacking contrast, or blurry. Your lack of adequate photo editing capabilities might lead you to shake your head, delete the photo, and cost yourself an easy opportunity to increase your online visibility. However, with PicsArt on your Android, iPhone, or iPod Touch, you basically have all the effects and editing tools of Photoshop a simple tap away.

Along with allowing you to touch up less clear photos, PicsArt gives you Stenciler, Sketcher, HDR, Vintage, Horton, as well as the freedom to draw and create images from scratch. How is that for fresh and spontaneous? Speaking of which, social sharing through Flickr, Picasa, Tumblr, Facebook, and similar sites is integrated for easy posting. Navigation and commands and simple and clearly visible.

Long gone is the fantasy that technology will bring about an increase in leisure time. As anyone who walks down the street while texting or checks email while watching a movie can attest, we have more tools for efficiency and communication due to technology, but we still do not have enough time for fun. It’s amazing that babies still get made in this go-go-go era where life and time are running at full speed. All we talk about is the lack of time for everything in our lives and even with our go-go gadgets we still can’t seem to get enough done. We envy those who can excel in life with only 4 hours of sleep a night or those who have hired help to do all the things we’d rather skip, like washing dishes, doing laundry, cooking, or heck, sometimes even playing with our kids!

Although the paper is a few years old already, Judith Wajcman’s exploration of time scarcity in, “Life in the Fast lane. Towards a Sociology of Technology and Time” reveals many of the reasons for the time shortage we all seem to face. In the article she makes the case for how capitalism, and the increase in households where both parents have to work, has brought about the time deficit in postmodern western societies. Interestingly, she points out how although men and women both have the same amount of leisure time, women’s leisure time is far more likely to be interrupted by their children’s needs or by unpaid work, which results in less of the restorative benefits from their free time.

Now, let’s flash forward to 2012, where most of us now have a smart phone or are getting one as soon as our dumb phones break or cause us embarrassment and social isolation. Assuming that our gadgets and gizmos are now interrupting our free time and our conversations more than ever, is anyone really getting any restorative benefit from their free time? Since our bosses now know that we can check email from anywhere at any time, if we don’t respond at 9 PM do we look like we are ignoring him or her, or that we are lacking in commitment?

How can we now draw the lines between “my time”, “gadget time” and “work time” when we live via smart phone? And now, with the acceleration of communication times and our constant reachability, relationships can meet strife when one person doesn’t get a text reply back in less than 24 hours. This begs the question: Is anyone really relaxing anymore? We try to squeeze in yoga classes and downtime, but is it really helping us when we are rushing to get there and fighting on the phone as we speed home to make dinner, clean the litter box, and say good night to our spouse, who is checking email in bed with eyes half open?

Given our addictions to our gadgets and our shortage of time, what can we do to keep our zen/sanity other than moving to the third world or constantly lying to friends about our phone battery being dead? I wish I had the answer. For now, I guess we can all start by taking baby steps such as turning off our phones for an hour or two a day, taking a walk outside, and creating away messages on our emails, social media pages, and voicemails, saying something along the lines of “Hi You have reached Jessica’s voicemail. She is currently engaging in uninterrupted real life experience in order to restore her sanity. If you wish to leave a message, please do so or join her for a cell phone-free walk on Saturday mornings at Will Rogers Beach.”

So tonight i went to Santa Monica to the Milken Center to hear Jason Nazar share without bleeps the methods to his madness. He walked the audience through more than sixty minutes of a very arefully structured set of 10 steps towards building, funding and sustaining a startup. It is very rare for me to be engaged for 10 minutes let alone sixty minutes (unless it is Creflo Dollar) and this wunderkind really did it, and did it well.

so what did the co-founder of DocStoc (20 million visitors a month) have to teach the audience of hundreds?
in short i would highlight these moments

1. he went out of his way to warn the would-be entrepreneurs to expect that the first two years would basically suck for anything more than the business and ONE THING (like family or friends) but not two things. so be prepared to sacrifice your health, your friends and/or your family. But balance this sacrifice with the reward that each day you wake up with unbridled anticipation to get to the office and not only do what you do best, but if you follow his hiring policy, then be surrouded by a team of those who do what they do best as well.

2. the trick to getting funded is simply laying out a plan of success with a finite timeline. then over-deliver on the successes and do it in a faster time than originally intended. He event went so far as to say tell your board one set of numbers and your team a different more aggressive set of numbers. then when the team deliver its numbers you report to the board those numbers which are magically better. and this goes for investors, as well as people you are trying to make deals with. in short i would call this whole "Aitza" (advice) a plea for setting expectations - not just for others but for yourself.

3. focus on the 1% that produces 90% of the results you need to grow your business. Stop wasting time on what he calls business STD's that use up 30% of your day and produce no tangible business value - like clearing up your desk. So always have your eye on the BIG ROCKS, not the sand and the pebbles. DRIVE TRAFFIC and be the best at any technique you find that is working. dont run to the next one until you spam the crap out of the techniques that work. he talked about how he is one of the top 10 people in the world that can monetize Adsense by example.

4. Be persistent. don't accept a soft no. so keep going after your prospects. hunt them down. buuy them drinks ala Schindler's List until you develop the social connection that moves the person out of being a prospect into being a colleague. Buttter up writers by retweeting their posts and commenting on their articles. then call in your chit months later. and remember that writers love talking to the CEO not the PR people.

i didnt stay for the mingling afterwards because i'm fighting a fever. my goal was to learn from a guru. and that i did. not sure if i would be willing to follow his advice all the way and "work more than the next guy". but i found his talk to be very TED like and very informative. and best of all was no notes. i am always impressed by this.

It's necessary to reach out to your prospective clients and start dialogues through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other sites and applications that help increase visibility. Consequently, checking, updating, and moderating these accounts goes hand in hand with your website optimization, which can eat up valuable time. Instead, consolidate your social media into one inbox with Notification Control.
While monitoring and optimizing the directory listings and social accounts of my growing list of Los Angeles website design clients is old hat to my savvy team of designers and search engine experts, it can seem overwhelming or simply a nuisance to a business owner or webmaster to hop around from login to login to see if anything new came in. If you use an RSS feed or reader for your favorite news sites and blogs, why not use a similar aid for your social networking accounts? Notification Control is a one-stop for new direct links, emails, and messages. It also lets you lets you prevent designated emails from coming in for spam or less relevant alerts as an alternative to setting up additional Gmail filters.

All you have to do to use Notification Control is visit its homepage where fourteen different social networking sites appear. You can view your existing accounts and you might even discover one or two more into which you can incorporate your brand.
